Work in Canada

What is a Work Permit?

A work permit is a document granted by a Canadian official to a non-Canadian citizen, permitting them to work in Canada.

Certain work permits come with restrictions, such as limiting employment to a particular industry, employer, or timeframe. Conversely, other permits offer more flexibility, allowing individuals to seek employment in various industries or with any employer within a specific occupation.

What is needed to apply for a Work Permit?

While most applicants typically require a job offer from a Canadian employer, backed by an LMIA*, certain exceptions exist.

For instance, some students may qualify for a PGWP** , providing them with an open work permit upon completing their study program.

What is an Open Work Permit?

An open work permit offers greater mobility as it is not tied to a specific job or employer. There are two types available:

Unrestricted: This permit allows individuals to work in any occupation or location.

Restricted: This permit limits employment to specific occupations or locations.

Both types of open work permits are exempt from the LMIA requirement.
